A spiritual comment and prayer to start the day with novelist and poet Zahid Hussain.

Good Morning,
When I was a boy, I used to look forward to Ramadan, so much so that I used to go moon-hunting.

The start of the month drew us together, friends from school and friends from home, but it was towards the end of the month when we were excitedly dreaming of Eid that I would ascend the heights of Corporation Park in Blackburn and sit with bag of goodies in my lap and wait for the opening of the fast 鈥 and potentially the last one of the month!

Words cannot convey the togetherness, the sheer sense of sharing and gratitude that flows in Ramadan. I recently read 鈥淎 Christmas Carol鈥 and that heady tide of goodwill towards others 鈥 Christmas spirit - is resonant with the spirit of Ramadan. What a beautiful feeling it is!

I would sit on the hill overlooking the old northern mill town and try, badly, to make out the new moon. The moment was a grand adventure for a young teenager. But you know, it鈥檚 never easy to sight a new moon in England!

However, that did not matter so much as breaking bread with others and then making the long walk down the hill back to our ordinary lives, but with the added bounce in our step that gave it all away, that Eid was coming...

Lord, your reach is infinite, your love depthless, without edge, without boundary. We are grateful for the spirit of sharing, the spirit of being one with others, the spirt of being a tiny part of your great purpose. Grant us the gift of being able to touch the essence of the divine in the day to day and enrich us so much so that every day is Eid.
