Pause For Thought

Pause For Thought
From Sarah Joseph, Editor of a Muslim lifestyle magazine:
lot’s happening in our house this week. Today is Eid – a day of celebration to mark the end of the month of fasting. Today is my daughter’s first A’Level exam. Tomorrow is my son’s degree presentation. And today is my birthday – adding another year to my tally of life on Earth! All of these things have something in common… A large dose of trial and tribulation came with each of them. For Eid – it has been 30 days of fasting – an intense physically, and emotionally demanding practise.
For our daughter it has been two years of study – often in the face of personal adversity for her. For our son – this is the culmination of a year of concentrated work, and many sleepless nights labouring at his computer. And as for my birthday – well the trial was all my mother’s. In addition to the standard pains of labour, she had massive life-threatening haemorrhages before, during, and after my birth. I’m hoping that she considers me worth the struggle. In Islam, trials and tribulations are not considered bad.
They are an inevitable part of the human experience, and are granted by God to help us grow in the qualities that God loves – for, as the Qur’an describes, God loves the grateful, and the people who patiently persevere. But trials are not permanent either. The Quran reminds that God will not test a soul with more than it can bear… In this verse The Merciful is giving us certainty that however bad things are, WE CAN GET THROUGH.
That knowledge is extraordinarily powerful – and gives confidence that the trial is bearable. In another verse God says in the Quran, that WITH hardship there is ease, and not just after it. This forces one to look for the light along the tunnel, not just at the end. These verses of the Quran, are foundational for me, in getting through life’s trials. They anchor me, and give me confidence. And when one is patient, and come through a tribulation, I find the sense of personal growth, incredibly powerful and fulfilling. And so, I shall celebrate my birthday – grateful for my mother’s trials. And we shall celebrate the children’s studies – grateful of the opportunity for the growth that this brought. And we shall of course, welcome the Eid celebrations that signal the achievement of completing another Ramadan.
