Pause For Thought

Pause For Thought
From comedian & writer Paul Kerensa:
Exciting to be here with showbiz royalty, and my favourite of all levels: 42! I hear the band-name comes from Hitch-hiker’s Guide to the Galaxy. Where ‘42’ is the answer to life, the universe and everything – we’re still working out what the question is. At school, Hitch-hiker’s Guide was required reading for geeks like me – and I was a geek. Founding member of Maths Club… We had 100 members, but that’s binary, so that actually meant 4.
To me the idea that a number could answer everything rather appealed. From an early age I pondered life’s big questions, partly thanks to rough health as a kid. I was told that I wouldn’t have children – pretty much before I even knew how to have children. So I embraced geekery, shunning girls and their many advances, thinking my life had been mapped out. Decades on, when our firstborn arrived, we baffled a few doctors. The plan I foresaw for myself, was a little off.
And my son’s birthdate made me ponder a wider plan. His birthdate of 10/10/10 even looked like code to a maths geek like me – a pattern of zeros and ones, a binary baby! Or it’s all coincidence – like being here, with Mark and the band, just when I need to wish my parents a happy wedding anniversary, because they’ve been married for… oh yes, 42 years. If life does have coding, maybe it has an almighty coder.
But whether or not there’s a wider plan, a bigger picture, I’ve taken comfort from my future’s unpredictability. When it seems I’ve walked through undergrowth, I look back and see the path, seemingly there all along. My road’s had more twists and turns than I thought, but it’s also got a few markers, and folks along the way to help give a lift. Perhaps I’m no nearer the answer to life, the universe and everything. And the question? Well here’s one: How can we expect to navigate life’s road without a map, and without asking for help? I think sometimes we need a guide, and sometimes we need to hitch-hike – at least, on this level.
