Pause For Thought

Pause For Thought
From Sheridan Voysey, Writer and broadcaster:
Like most people, I鈥檝e had my down days and dark seasons. But they鈥檝e never been deep or dark enough to require medication. So in preparation for Mental Health Week, I asked some friends who had reached those depths about their experience. I learnt some important lessons. I learnt that people who wrestle with their mental health don鈥檛 want to be defined by their illness. The depression, anxiety or panic attacks they experience are a part of their life, not the whole it. They are primarily mothers, brothers, builders, artists, with hopes and hobbies like everyone else. This is important, because the way we see someone changes how we relate to them. When we only see an illness, we can be tempted to become pseudo-social workers, trying to fix people with our good advice and cheer-up talks.听
The people I spoke with didn鈥檛 need that. They wanted someone to take them out for a coffee and chat about everyday things. In short, they needed friends. For me, one of The most touching scenes in the Gospels is when Jesus comforts his friends Mary and Martha. Their brother Lazarus has died, they鈥檙e grieving, and before Jesus brings him back to life, he weeps. What matters in that moment is entering his friend鈥檚 emotional experience. One of the most beautiful stories I heard was about a woman I鈥檒l call Erica. Erica was in the depths鈥攄eeper and darker than most of us will ever reach. But she had a friend named Emily. When Erica needed to cry, Emily didn鈥檛 stop the tears. When Erica needed to scream, Emily didn鈥檛 quiet her down. When Erica needed hope, Emily had some encouragement ready. Emily was present. At her darkest moment, Erica lay curled up in an armchair one afternoon. She鈥檇 lost hope, and Emily had no words left.听
And so Emily did what only she could do. She climbed on to that armchair and gave her friend a hug. Erica drifted off to sleep. Then Emily did too. And that鈥檚 how they stayed for the next two hours鈥攖wo friends embracing in silence. Ten years later, Erica remembers that cuddle more than anything else. Those who wrestle with mental health are bigger than their illness. As it turns out, the greatest gift we can give them is celebrate that鈥攁nd simply be present.
