Alan joins The Verb to talk about the river writing in his latest novel 鈥楾he Sparsholt Affair鈥� (Picador), in which he exploits the romantic possibilities of tolls (on river bridges).聽 He also explores the 鈥榙evout drench鈥� of Ted Hughes鈥� great incantatory river poem 鈥楻ain-Charm for the Duchy鈥�, and celebrates the craft of Penelope Fitzgerald in her novel 鈥極ffshore鈥�, in which she depicts a group of people living on barges on the Thames. Alan won the Booker Prize in 2004 for 鈥楾he Line of Beauty鈥�.

MacGillivray is a writer and artist who has just published her third book of poetry 鈥楾he Gaelic Garden of the Dead鈥� (Bloodaxe). She performs her poem 鈥極n Seeing The Poet鈥檚 Drowned Corpse Float By鈥�, commissioned by The Verb, which is animated by the image of a river whirlpool. Macgillivray also talks about the vertiginous experience of walking a dry river-bed in Arizona and reflects on a strange encounter with the last river seen by Mary Queen of Scots.
