Pause For Thought

Pause For Thought
From Paul Oxley, vicar of St Mark鈥檚 in Milton Keynes:
Last week we packed our 8 year-old off for her first ever school residential trip. She was a little nervous but mostly excited. We parents were a little excited, but mostly nervous. We gathered outside the school and watched as the class piled onto the coach while their back-packs, pillows, sleeping bags, coats, toys, teddy-bears and kitchen sinks were loaded into the luggage-hold. Then, we bravely waved off our little darlings, their faces pinned to the window, sweets already being passed round.听
The coach driver tooted the horn and accelerated up the road, which immediately struck me as ambitious. It鈥檚 a residential road culminating in a cul-de-sac. A three-pointer is tight in a regular family car - but the driver seemed confident. So鈥e watched. The initially confident driver was soon trapped in what had become a 17 point star-turn, and still the coach was essentially facing forward. There was nothing for it. The driver was going to have to give up and back down. 鈥淏eep, Beep, Beep鈥濃he reversing signal alerting the world to the sheepish driver鈥檚 mistake. We all chuckled and waved, but I felt for the guy. I hate having to back down and admit I was wrong鈥nd a quick glance at the news or social media would suggest I am not the only one.听
As a Christian, one of my chief hopes is to become more Christ-like. When I was younger I hoped that if I became more like Jesus I鈥檇 be able to walk on water or make wine come out of taps. Now though, I wonder if his characteristics such as humility might actually be of more value. Maybe if I held my views more lightly, took myself less seriously and was more ready to back-up and admit gracefully I was wrong, then maybe my road might be less bumpy. Maybe if we all did it there might be more peace and less division. Only one way to find out probably?! Anyway. The trip was a success. Everyone had fun, nobody slept. And the learned coach driver chose a different route home.
