The inquiry into the contaminated blood scandal - described as one of the biggest disasters in the history of the NHS - starts hearing evidence today.

In the 1970s and '80s thousands of people with haemophilia and other disorders were given blood products infected with hepatitis viruses and HIV. It's thought more than 2,400 people died while thousands more across the UK were left in very poor health. At the time, the UK was struggling to keep up with demand for a new treatment aimed at curing Haemophilia. The NHS ended up importing blood from the US, where high-risk groups like prisoners were paid to give blood.
