Ziggy Stardust and Roxy Music

David Bowie talks about perhaps his most famous creation, in a lifetime of invention and originality, Ziggy Stardust and Roxy Music describe the making of their debut album.

After seven years Johnnie opens the tenth and final series where he began Long Players with David Bowie and perhaps his most famous creation, in a lifetime of invention and originality, Ziggy Stardust, backed by the Spiders From Mars. Johnnie and David Hepworth also enjoy a debut eponymous album from glam rockers Roxy Music – released on exactly the same day – June 16th 1972.

As ever we have sourced some archive ³ÉÈË¿ìÊÖ clips where David talks about Lou Reed, Iggy Pop, the character of Ziggy and we also hear from Queen’s Roger Taylor (who took Freddie Mercury to the first Ziggy Stardust gig), David’s lifelong friend George Underwood, and Spider’s Trevor Bolder and Mick Woody Woodmansey, alongside classic tracks from David’s fifth album.

David and Johnnie discuss the album and Hunky Dory, the amazing work of producer Ken Scott and Mick Ronson and pose a question about record sales. David mentions that this sounded like a new era. Johnnie also says that the record company said there’s no single on this and, as with Roxy Music, sometimes the big hit comes later or gets added on. They also remember the Starman appearance on Top Of The Pops and the fact that David looked so happy.

The second album is Roxy Music by Roxy Music which introduced us to their trademark sound and eye for fashion, sleeve design and musical innovation, plus the first works of Brian Eno, which Bryan Ferry remembers gave them a new palette of sounds. Tracks including Re-Make/Re-Model, If There Is Something and Ladytron as well as the separate single Virginia Plain are featured along with comments from Bryan, Phil Manzanera, Andy Mackay and Paul Thompson.
