Pause For Thought

Pause For Thought
Matt Woodcock, Church of England Pioneer Minister and Mission Supporter in the Diocese of York:
I’m relieved to say, Zoe, that I’ve got my mojo back. It has been a month to forget. I’ve been tired, irritable and self-pitying. We can’t find a house to move into. I’ve said the wrong thing at the wrong time to the wrong people. Just last week I made a right howler calling a funeral directors. ‘Hello, can I help?’ someone answered. ‘Hi - is that Colin?’ I asked. ‘No. It’s Brenda.’
Oops. And I must look like the worst vicar dad ever. Of all the World Book Day characters my daughter could have gone to school as - she chose that cat from Cinderella. Lucifer. Thank heavens, then, for Jackie. A legend in our parish. Popping round to her terrace house blew my black clouds away. I turned up to find the front room a sacred scene of beautiful chaos. Kids, parents, friends, neighbours and all their pet dogs, crammed shoulder to shoulder - and paw to paw - round a huge improvised meal table. The air filled with talking, laughing, barking - and the frenzied demolition of a steaming Shepherd’s Pie.
Jackie has made it her mission to share their table whenever possible. To welcome and befriend. To create a gathering place where mobiles are outlawed and good food and honest conversation is king. I left Jackie’s lounge feeling restored and revived. She’s inspired me to take more opportunities to get my invites out, oven on, and table laid. It didn’t surprise me to read recently of the psychological and emotional benefits of eating together. It makes us feel better. A proven reliever of conditions like anxiety and depression. And the social disease I see all too often - loneliness.
For me, communal feasting also has spiritual benefits. The Bible talks of it bringing gladness and strength to the human heart. Little wonder, then, that Jesus was forever gathering people round the meal table. In times of joy and celebration - but also in his most anguished moments. So I’m trying to create a few table gathering opportunities this Easter week. A poignant Last Supper reenactment at church. An Easter barbecue EGGstravaganza at the local. I’ll be hoping, Zoe, - as an Ancient Greek physician once wrote - that ‘food be thy medicine and medicine be thy food.’ Failing that, it’s all back to Jackie’s house.
