Pick up a typical self-help book and it probably won鈥檛 be long before the author tells you to Follow your dreams. As a dreamer, I love this advice. But if you were to ask my wife about hers, she鈥檇 struggle to tell you. Because she鈥檚 not a dreamer, and that鈥檚 ok. To my mind then, the real question for dreamer and non-dreamer alike is what matters most in life and how we can follow after that. A few years ago my friend DJ and I did a pilgrimage from Northumberland to Durham鈥攅ight days of coasts, castles, beauty and blisters!聽
On one of those days I turned to DJ and asked: What would you regret not doing by the end of your life? The question soon became like a diver searching the sea floor, unearthing all sorts of treasures. DJ鈥檚 first response was embarrassment because all he could think of were platitudes. I suggested he voice the platitudes so the rest might follow. 鈥極K,鈥� he said, 鈥業 would regret not completing my PhD, or doing more research, or not seeing my daughters grow up healthy and happy鈥︹�� And then he paused. The diver was leaving the shallows to go deep. DJ鈥檚 next words were slow and thoughtful.聽
鈥業 would regret not helping my daughters find God for themselves, discover their vocations, and doing what I could to help them meet life鈥檚 challenges.鈥� One of DJ鈥檚 daughters has cerebral palsy, so this was no small statement. The diver had unearthed its first treasure. Later, DJ asked me what I would regret not doing by the end of my life. Like him, I started with the obvious things鈥攂ooks I wanted to write, film projects I wanted to do. But in time my words too became hushed. 鈥業 would regret not developing some life-long friendships, and I would regret not being there for others at life鈥檚 biggest turning points.鈥櫬�
I reckon it鈥檚 one thing to dream about tomorrow, another to imagine looking back on our lives at the end. I鈥檝e discovered that asking what I would regret not doing by then has a way of revealing what really matters鈥攁nd the integrity, bravery and love needed to follow after them today.
