In Hessle, near Hull, Nick, his DIY SOS team and hundreds of kind volunteers step up to help roofer Darren and his sons. Darren was married to childhood love Sarah and is dad to Harvey (14), step-dad to Mike (24) and adopted dad of Oliver (17), who is severely disabled.
Darren suffered from a bad back for years, then one day he was rushed into theatre with caude equina syndrome – a devastating injury to the spinal cord. Darren was left paralysed from the waist down and unable to walk.
After three months of rehab, he returned home to his family in a wheelchair. He was left sharing Oliver’s downstairs bedroom and slept in a hospital bed, separated from Sarah and struggling for space.
Then, just weeks later, on Boxing Day, tragedy struck again when Sarah suddenly died in their home and was found upstairs by her boys. Since that moment the boys and Darren have been living in emotional trauma, with wheelchair-bound dad now the single main carer for the family. He is physically unable to cope in a house that’s not set up for this situation.
In this episode, aside from the usual emotion moments and build mayhem, Nick skilfully adjudicates between designer Oliver Heath and Julian over the landscape design, the DIY SOS team try out wheelchair rugby, and heavy rain threatens the newly laid resin paths.
Darren desperately needs an adapted home to care for himself - so he may care for his boys - and that’s where DIY SOS and their wonderful volunteers step in, to help this brave father.
