Pause For Thought

Pause For Thought
From Father Brian D鈥橝rcy, a Catholic Passionist priest:聽
The American novelist, Nigel Hawthorne once wrote: 鈥淗appiness is like a butterfly, which, when pursued, is just beyond your grasp, but which, if you sit quietly will alight upon you.鈥 Like all helpful insights, it takes time and reflection to uncover its wisdom. In my work as a priest I often meet heroism and holiness where I least expect it.聽
I鈥檓 thinking of a young man I knew who, recently married and in the prime of life, was told he was suffering from a terminal illness. At the time, he and his wife were blissfully happy, looking forward to starting their family I dreaded going to see them when they asked me to chat through funeral arrangements. It wasn鈥檛 that long since I鈥檇 helped plan their wedding service. On the long drive through Ireland for my first visit, I prayed a lot and rehearsed words of comfort over and over in my head. To my surprise the young man and his wife were by now much further along the road to emotional healing than I was.聽
When I stumbled my way through half-baked expressions of sorrow, the husband though spent and weak, clasped his wife鈥檚 hand and said: 鈥淏rian you know there are worse things then dying.鈥 When I asked what could be worse than dying, he replied: 鈥淭o live to old age and never know the love we have.鈥 When it came to his funeral service I told that story to the mourners. Afterwards it was all anyone there remembered 鈥 and it was all they needed to remember. We never know what we鈥檙e capable of until we鈥檙e tested. Michelangelo could sculpt a beautiful, delicate, warm, protective angel out of a hard, cold slab of marble. He was asked to explain his technique for that particular work of art.聽
His answer was brilliant: 鈥淚 looked at the marble block and saw an angel there. I worked diligently until I set the angel free.鈥 That gives me endless hope. If I look long enough into my own cold heart, I鈥檒l discover the angel of happiness there waiting to be set free. And so will you. It鈥檚 hope not despair which should shape the future.
