Pause For Thought

Pause For Thought

From the Reverend Richard Coles:

Ìý

I am not proud of this, but I cannot help feeling a twinge of regret that the Bible records the story of the prophetess Miriam celebrating the Israelites escape from Egypt by taking up a tambourine and starting a conga; because of that, people for whom these Scriptures are sacred have felt compelled from time to time to follow in her footsteps.

Ìý

With varying degrees of success: Jews doing a circle dance to Hava Nagila at a do - mazal tov - and a standing ovation too for the Mevlevi dancers (whirling dervishes as they were once known) of the mystical Sufi tradition in Islam.

Ìý

By the time we get to the Church of England, however, it is difficult to maintain that same level of enthusiasm. There’s something about vicars dancing that just doesn’t compute - as Clauds and Tess know only too well, having seen my Paso Doble, the lowest scoring in Strictly history. Not all vicars, of course, get the chance to reconfigure the body in motion so spectacularly, and in front of so many people; but at any church social there’s a risk that the curate, sooner or later, will attempt a Saturday Night Fever. And it is very often excruciating. Why? Partly because of expectations - thanks to sitcoms, most people think vicars let our hair down by having an extra digestive to dunk in our tea - but I think it is also to do with religious people being on bad terms with the body. There is something about what we believe, and how we express it, that produces physical awkwardness; sometimes I sense that we are at war with our bodies, concealed under enveloping garments of sombre black.

Ìý

A terrible mistake, I think, to believe that the body God gives us, and the wonderful things it can do, should be treated with suspicion and mistrust. We are, the Bible says, made in God’s image, and if it was good enough for God it should be good enough for us, lithe or clumsy, Stacey Dooley or Theresa May. Or indeed Tess and Claudia, never more beautiful than now, sweaty and knackered for Comic Relief, which has been keeping bodies in motion in the teeth of poverty and starvation and disaster for more than thirty years. For the glory of God is human being fully alive ... keep dancin’.
