Will Young sits in for Jo Whiley. He's joined down the line in the US by bestselling author Angie Thomas for the latest edition of the Radio 2 Book Club, discussing her latest book, On The Come Up.

Angie is a former teen rapper with a BFA in creative writing born and raised in Mississippi. She released her first young adult novel The Hate U Give to widespread acclaim in 2017. Her story of 16-year-old Starr inspired by the Black Lives Matter movement was a New York Times and Amazon UK bestseller, as well as winning numerous awards. The film adaptation of the book was released in October 2018.

Angie is now back with her new book, On The Come Up, released earlier this month, follows sixteen-year-old Bri, who wants to be one of the greatest rappers of all time. As the daughter of an underground hip hop legend who died right before he hit big, Bri鈥檚 got massive shoes to fill. But it鈥檚 hard to get your come up when you鈥檙e labeled a hoodlum at school, and your fridge at home is empty after your mom loses her job. So Bri pours her anger and frustration into her first song, which goes viral鈥or all the wrong reasons.
