Pause For Thought

Pause For Thought

From Dave Tomlinson,听writer and vicar:

This week I鈥檝e found myself thinking a lot about a man named Stuart, more widely known as Tagzee.听 It was almost exactly three years ago that I took his funeral.听 Tagzee was an urban artist with a remarkable gift for visualising beauty in ordinary things 鈥 especially in stuff most of us see as rubbish.

He was an artistic recycler: someone who relentlessly transformed discarded objects like old cardboard boxes into amazing works of art, some of which were exhibited at the Royal Academy of Arts.

He also invented his own unique genre of 鈥榩uddle art鈥. After wiping a canvass in a puddle, he would ponder the stains left by the muddy water then work with them to create magnificent exotic paintings.

But best of all, Tagzee recognised beauty in discarded people. Most of his money was donated to homeless charities and he ran art workshops for the homeless 鈥 arranging exhibitions in caf茅s where their work was displayed and sold. Stephen Robertson the CEO of the Big Issue said Tagzee鈥檚 work 鈥榮urprised and inspired people to look again at the things we take for granted.鈥

In what I would call a natural form of mindfulness, Tagzee approached art (and life in general) with curiosity and acceptance, alert to the hidden beauty in the ordinary.

In church terms, we are now in the season of Epiphany which began with the story of the magi recognising God revealed in a humble babe. For me, however, Epiphany is a reminder that God appears in every child, that beauty is all around, often where we least expect it, that the world is crammed with wonder and divinity once we pause to notice.

Whether we call it faith or mindfulness or romantic imagination, I think there is a way of living that moves beyond the surface (whether that鈥檚 appealing or disconcerting), which connects with the amazing wonder of being alive.

I confess, I鈥檓 still not that good at this, but I do resolve that in 2019 I鈥檒l be less focused on what I wish my life could be and more appreciative and embracing of what it is.
