I鈥檝e just returned from a short trip to Boston.听 I like flying, but my wife loves the whole airport and watching the people bit, but she鈥檚 less sure about the prospect of spending several hours in a metal tube at 30000 feet.听 I suspect she just tries not to think about it.

听

I understand, but I am intrigued by the fact the plane stays in the air.听 I know how it works 鈥� the aircraft鈥檚 wings are shaped and angled to allow the oncoming air to be deflected downwards.听 As long as the plane is travelling above a certain speed, this lifts the plane and keeps it in the air.听 It looks like magic, but it鈥檚 not.听

听

It reminds me of a wonderful phrase in ancient Jewish literature 鈥� 鈥榯oleh eretz al belimah鈥� 鈥� God somehow suspends the universe on nothing at all.听 Even taking jet streams into account, this feels quite true, especially when looking out of a plane window into, well, nothing.

听

听Even though I fly often, I want to retain my fascination and curiosity at this incredible invention and to recognise the God-given genius that brought it to the world.


I believe that curiosity is central to a meaningful existence.听 It鈥檚 the most important tool for understanding ourselves, the world and God himself.听 I was disappointed, if amused, to hear about a lesson delivered in a very religious school in which the teacher asked the pupils if they could explain how a plane works.听 One raised his hand and said, 鈥業 can.鈥櫶� When asked to elaborate, he said, 鈥業t goes along the runway, flies in the air, then returns to the ground鈥�.听 So much for curiosity.

听

Towards the end of his life, Albert Einstein, said 鈥榯he important thing is not to stop questioning鈥� One cannot help but be in awe when one contemplates the mysteries of eternity鈥� It is enough if one tries merely to comprehend a little of this mystery each day.鈥�

听

I reckon any of us can stop for a moment during a busy day to marvel about the world.听 To see eternity in the smile of a child going to school or to marvel at the beauty of a tree on the way to work, instead of just rushing past it, or in my case, tripping over it.听 Almost anything can be a source of wonder and inspiration 鈥� we just need a little curiosity.
