Northern Ireland's top health official has apologised to the families of adults who were abused at Muckamore Abbey Hospital. A review into safety of adults with learning difficulties there revealed many patients were compromised. Richard Pengelly, the permanent secretary at the Department of Health, told families at a meeting last night that he was "appalled and angered that vulnerable people were let down". He also confirmed that the Department is "actively considering" a proposal to introduce adult safeguarding legislation in Northern Ireland.

And a female inspector in Derry says more women should be encouraged to sign up for a career in policing. It comes as recent figures show just over 70 per cent of front line staff are men. The PSNI says the number of female officers and those applying to join is increasing. Our reporter Teresa Craig has been finding out what it's like working as a woman in a male-dominated environment.
