Pause For Thought

Pause For Thought

From the Reverend Kate Bottley:

Ìý

As a great Australian philosopher once said, ‘Everybody needs good neighbours’ and we’ve been very blessed with ours. Kevin from next door is an absolute legend, he happily takes parcels in, lends his hedge trimmer and occasionally will walk Buster, our dog for us.

Ìý

The need arose a couple of weeks ago, when Mr Bottley and I decided on an impromptu family trip to Beautiful Blackpool for fish and chips, rollercoasters and a look and the illuminations. Kevin was drafted in for doggy duty and as we left we warned him to be careful because for weeks our front door had been misbehaving, the handle was struggling to turn in one direction and it had become a real pain.

Ìý

A few hours later we returned stuffed full of doughnuts, with a stick of rock for Kevin, and as we opened the front door straight away something was different, better, not broken. The handle turned, no squeak, no grind, Kevin had decided to fix it.Ìý I went straight round next door to deliver his gift and to thank him for his stella effort

Ìý

It was a small gesture that made a big impression on me and Mr Bottley.

Ìý

The world is a broken place, and as I see it this gives us a couple of options, to think that nothing can be done and to give up, or to be more Kevin, to try and fix whatever we can, whenever we can, no matter how small, even though we know there’s a chance that it might break all over again.

Ìý

The social justice writer and activist L R Knost said ‘Do not be dismayed by the brokenness of the world. All things break. And all things can be mended. Not with time but with intention. The broken world waits in the darkness for the light that is you.’ The bible echoes this saying ‘The light shines in the darkness and the darkness will never overcome it.’

Ìý

Children in Need is all about loving our neighbour just a little bit more and making the light shine in the darkness just a little bit brighter. So to each and everyone of you, whether you’ve donated or plan to donate 20p or 20 grand, thank you for shining the light and doing your very best to try and help fix the brokenness, even just for a little while.
