Good Morning . Today is the second week of Black History Month in the UK. Unlike our American cousins who celebrate this event in February, the month of October is a wonderful opportunity to recognise and affirm the humungous contributions black people have made to this country over the centuries. Black History Month is invariably an occasion to write back into history those who have been written out, ensuring that everyone knows this history. This month aims to inform, inspire and educate; it encourages us to be proud of who we are and better understand our history and origins. In doing so, it debunks fallacies, clarifies errors and builds bridges, enabling what was formerly the preserve of the Black British community to permeate the so-called mainstream.
For me, the UK church is integrally linked to Black History Month. Those Black Christian men and women who came to Britain as part of the Windrush Generation, seeking to rebuild the country after the ravages of the Second World War, brought with them a faith that revitalised formally all-white congregations across the country. These men and women, and those who followed, have also been at the forefront of a spiritual and social movement that calls for the church to match its passion for a God of justice with a compassion for the poor and marginalised. As such, Black History Month would be incomplete if it did not include their stories, and it is my hope that these celebrations will lead to everyone being cognizant of this history.
We thank you Lord for those brave, visionary men and women whose contributions to this country鈥檚 history have been pivotal, but often gone unnoticed. We welcome those opportunities to recognise and affirm these individuals, asking that we may also be inspired to make a difference in our world.
