I鈥檓 so sorry not to be there with you this morning.听 It sounds fun.听 Having said that, though, perhaps it鈥檚 for the best because I have a suspicion I might be just a touch intimidated because my word you鈥檙e a disciplined bunch.听 And, to be frank, I am not.

听

But you, Tom, you鈥檝e disciplined your body to do things a body simply shouldn鈥檛.听 Richard, Miles, gentlemen of Reef 鈥� you know the emotional and mental discipline that goes into a performance with any soul.听 Kirsty - you know that running a career and a home requires practical discipline, managing time, space, people. Superhuman discipline.

听

And yet, not one of those things - body, soul, mind, home, work - is enough on its own to make us human.听 And as well as superhuman, you鈥檙e all just ordinarily human.As you鈥檝e gathered, the reason I鈥檓 not there is that I am instead in leafy Northamptonshire at the 45th Greenbelt Festival.

听

Greenbelt was started on a farm in the 70s by some Christian hippies and since then it鈥檚 grown, moved, shrunk, moved again and grown again. But the one thing it has not done is remain just a music festival.

听

Because a great festival isn鈥檛 just about the music. So at Greenbelt you鈥檒l hear other things too, about politics, about faith, about love.听 You鈥檒l hear argument and debate, comedy and commentary.听 It鈥檚 complicated. It鈥檚 beautiful. It鈥檚 human.

听

Jesus knew about the complications of being human, how the personal, political, emotional and physical are all untidily knotted together.听 And he knew what was important.

听

I believe Jesus didn鈥檛 care about who you kissed, but how much you cared.听 He didn鈥檛 worry about what you owned, but what you did with it.听 He wasn鈥檛 fussed about how you how you organised yourselves, as long as you organised yourselves to look after the vulnerable and stand up for the oppressed.

听

So this weekend, I hope I鈥檒l have the discipline, in this beautiful place, with these amazing people, to sort out what matters from what doesn鈥檛: to listen generously, to watch attentively and to speak kindly and that maybe I鈥檒l learn to be a little more joyful, a little more loving, a little more aware, a little more human.

听

That would be a good Greenbelt.听 That would be a good weekend any weekend.
