From Father Brian D鈥橝rcy, a Catholic Passionist priest:

It took me a lifetime to appreciate the value of true friendship. Oscar Wilde, with biting cynicism, said: 鈥渁 true friend stabs you in the front.鈥� I can鈥檛 agree with him.

听

For an ageing bachelor like me, friendship helps me to understand and to be understood. If I were to describe friend I would say it鈥檚 someone who makes it easy for me to believe in goodness.

听

Some maintain there are three kinds of friends. There are those who come into your life for a reason, those who come for a season and those who stay for a lifetime.

听

I used to worry I didn鈥檛 do enough to stay in touch with friends from the past. But when I think about it, not every friendship has to last forever.

听

I鈥檝e had great friends who came into my life for a period. It鈥檚 as if they came to me as a sign of God鈥檚 care for me when I badly needed a listening ear. They gave me precious gifts like trust, understanding and most of all guidance. And perhaps I helped them too. When life鈥檚 circumstances changed however, they disappeared as quickly as they came. They were friends for a reason.

听

Then there were people I became friends with because of where I lived. When I studied in America I met great people who were a joy to be with. The same happened when I worked in Africa for a period. As soon as I came home, the friendships died a natural death. They were real, uplifting and helpful but friends just for a season. They were generous people who loved me when I forgot to love myself. 滨鈥檓 eternally grateful to them all.

听

滨鈥檓 most grateful however for the friends who have stayed with me on the arduous journey of life. I might not meet them for months yet we can pick up on a conversation in a heartbeat. Lifetime friends grow separately without growing apart.

听

A lifetime friend is someone who reaches for your hand and stays in your heart. They are God-sends, literally, and I could never have survived without 鈥榓 little help from my friends.鈥�

听
