A heatwave: in its haze all is still, the garden parched, and if like me you鈥檙e obliged to wear a uniform as well adapted to the weather as a mankini in Antarctica, you long for the shade, the hammock, the cooling glass.

It鈥檚 the nearest we鈥檝e got, I think, to summer of 鈥�76, when reservoirs dried up, standpipes were in the streets, and the bath water had to be recycled for the roses. Not only a summer of heat, but a summer of punk. The Sex Pistols exploded onto the scene, and in boiling weather we all went into meltdown at their furious antics. I watched with a mixture of fear and fascination, and loved it.

I was fourteen, a public schoolboy in Northamptonshire, with limited options to join the fray. 成人快手made piercings were rather frowned upon in the Chapel Choir, so instead I made myself a badge out of safety pins and nuts and bolts which looked like a tiny plane had crashed on my lapel, or did until I had to dismantle it for infringing uniform regulations. Anarchy at Evensong was not tolerated.

But it changed my life; two years later I escaped, and ended up in London. In the churn of 80s music and politics, energised by punk, we rose to the top the charts and sank to the depths of depravity; but it wasn鈥檛 just us. Punk changed all our lives, its impact went far beyond music and popular culture. You could argue it went on to transform media, news, business, tech, politics; and while they may seem very distant from Sid Vicious, Gucci, Elon Musk, and the Alt Right betray his influence.

Vicar in a mohawk sounds like a Morrissey lyric, but actually anyone who knows church history will see a precedent. The early church was punk: a group of unbiddably confrontational nobodies, fearless, who came from nowhere, shocked the world with their contempt for the status quo, lived as if there were no tomorrow (for many there wasn鈥檛) and proclaimed a new life, which they started to live without seeking anyone鈥檚 permission to begin. That radicalism can still grab and transform and enliven all sorts of people in all sorts of places - I long for it again in the church, the country, the world.
