Pause For Thought

Pause For Thought

Writer and Musician, Jahnavi Harrison:

Ìý

Straight after this I’m back on the train and straight to a pre-wedding ceremony for one of my childhood friends. It’s the third wedding I’ve been a part of in the last few weeks…such is the blessed madness we call summertime…

Ìý

In a traditional Hindu wedding, a day or two before tying the knot, the bride and groom individually take part in a ceremony called pithi, or haldi, in which the bride and groom both end up a lovely shade of buttercup yellow!

Ìý

As far as the bride’s side goes, a paste is made of turmeric powder, rose water and chickpea flour - and all the assembled mums, aunties, sisters and grandmas take turns to one by one dip their hand in the bowl of paste and apply it, like a mud pack, on every part of exposed skin - the bride clothed, I should add - but that doesn’t stop it from getting pretty messy after a while!

Ìý

After everyone has had a go, it all gets washed off - sometimes in the shower, but if the bride is up for it, with a hose-down in a back garden paddling pool! Needless to say the line is often crossed into water fight territory.

Ìý

The paste is cooling and soothing to the skin, and the yellow turmeric root gives a gentle glow once it’s washed off, but beyond beauty there is a deeper significance of the ceremony. It’s a time for the bride to gather together with all the women in her life who love her, and who have nurtured her, cried with her, encouraged her and brought her to this moment.

Ìý

As she sits and allows the paste to be applied, their hands one by one tenderly touch her feet, knees, shoulder and face, with a prayer for her happiness and protection in this next chapter of life.

Ìý

It’s not an exaggeration to say I’ve attended hundreds of weddings in my life. My Dad is a priest so our family have helped out with more than a fair share. Though the rituals are the same each time, I’m always moved in experiencing the power of collective prayer that manifests during these rites of passage. Though the wedding fever will die down come autumn, I hope to remember the value of a community of care always.
