Script

Good morning

You are probably listening to this broadcast on your Radio, tablet or mobile phone. Thanks to advances in modern communications technology it is now easier than ever to find out what is going on around the world.
Ìý
Yet despite the availability of 24-hour news channels and unrivalled access to information in our pockets, we still struggle to hear the voices of the powerless in our world. I would argue that important news is often drowned out by the clamour of what is loudest and in front of our faces.Ìý This means that the lives of the forgotten millions of internally displaced people around the world, who live without the protection of refugee status, barely crack the news agenda. Yet, we are bombarded with daily updates of what is happening on popular reality TV shows..Ìý

The ability to direct our attention towards, or away, from something has great power.Ìý This public attention can expose wrongdoing, topple corrupt regimes and bring about positive action.Ìý The Media has a vital role in rooting out injustice and speaking truth to power.Ìý It was Finley Peter Dunne who first said: ‘The job of the newspaper is to comfort the afflicted and afflict the comfortable.’

In the Bible, God spoke to Elijah not in the howling wind, or the earthquake or the fire but in a still small voice.

Lord God, help us to seek out and listen to the whisper, to filter out the clanging noise that often distracts us from what is really important and take notice of the plight of the ignored, the downtrodden and the forgotten.Ìý Amen.
