Interfaith

Good morning

Tonight I hope to break my Ramadan fast at an interfaith event.

Throughout Britain, during the month of Ramadan, Muslims are often joined by people from other faiths to celebrate the ending of the day鈥檚 fast. Such events take place in mosques of course, but Churches and Synagogues often play host to wonderful evening feasts for the month of Ramadan, with many people of other faiths fasting the day of the event in solidarity.

Religions often get a bad press for 鈥渘ot getting along鈥, and indeed we can all think of examples of terrible clashes, even between people of the SAME religion, although different denominations.

Yet, there is also a very strong global interfaith movement, and faith inspired, shared commitments to very similar goals such as poverty, and mitigating the effects of climate change. Indeed, just last month, I was at an interfaith conference discussing the issues around Artificial Intelligence. Very Sci Fi 鈥 but also raising reflective and important issues pertaining to the fundamental question of what it is to be human.

Coming as I do, from a Christian background, I am profoundly grateful to have known and loved God through two world faiths. I see within my own family the joy of dialogue, and mutual respect. For this reason, I鈥檓 privileged to be amongst a panel of judges meeting later this month on a project called 21 for 21. We鈥檙e searching for 21 interfaith leaders, for the 21st century.

O Merciful Lord, let leaders who build diverse and respectful communities emerge and be strengthened in their work. Let us never be arrogant in Your name. The Muslim poet Rumi declared 鈥淭he lamps are different but the Light is the same鈥 鈥 grant that we may all be carriers of Your Divine Light. Ameen.
