The Phil Kids, Codetta Youth, Notre Dame (USA), Police Male Voice Choir

Enjoy the great variety of music and meet the singers, the choirs and the people behind the scenes who give the thriving choral tradition in Ulster its international reputation.

Sing Out celebrates the thriving popularity and the very high standard of choral music in Northern Ireland.
Who are all these people who sing and why do they do it? It's an opportunity to enjoy the choirs singing and talking about their passion and get an insight into this wonderful world of music, where absolutely anyone can be a participant, where musical expertise can range from beginners to highly sophisticated.

This week, John Anderson calls in on the Phil Kids, 300+ kids from 7 years up 20 years who are part of an ambitious and innovative 10 year programme, he goes to Derry/Londonderry where Codetta greet the Choir of Notre Dame from the USA, and the Police Male Voice Choir give a rousing concert in Glanmachan.

The series is an affectionate and unashamedly biased celebration of choral music and people in Northern Ireland today.

Phil Kids Children's Choir

Phil Kids Children's Choir

The Phil Kids Choir was founded in 2006 under the leadership of Christopher Bell who was then Chorus Master of the Philharmonic Choir.  Young singers come to sing and make music from all sections of the community and from all over Belfast and beyond.

The Children’s Choir has 218 singers from 7 – 11 years.  All the young singers are taught musicianship as well as choral singing based on the philosophy of the Hungarian composer Zoltan KodaIy.

At Phil Kids the staff believe that music learning through singing should be fun and enjoyable for children.  So, every week in musicianship classes the children play singing and rhythm games as well as singing in the choir.

Friendship and joy through singing is what Phil Kids is all about.

The Police Male Voice Choir

(Incorporating the Royal Ulster Constabulary GC Male Voice Choir)

The Choir was formed in 1973.  Within two years the membership had grown to 35 and the decision was taken to enter the Morecambe Music Festival where they were awarded first place.  Since then, they have continued to compete against other male voice choirs, taking part in thirty one music festivals and being awarded twenty two first places and seven second places.  The choir has performed throughout the United Kingdom and has toured and performed in Sweden, Germany, Canada and the Czech Republic.

During the past forty five years the choir has, through their concert performances, raised approximately £500,000 for community projects, and always welcomes requests to give concerts for fund-raising.
