A spiritual comment and prayer to begin the day with Richard Hill.

Good Morning. Later today the 71st Cannes film festival will open. Behind all the glitz and glamour, you鈥檒l find the biggest film marketplace in the world.
I鈥檝e been fortunate to attend many times and even walked the red carpet on a few occasions although this year for the first time there is a complete ban on what have been called 鈥済rotesque鈥 red carpet selfies!
Even more controversially there has been a fuss about the fact films which have never seen a cinematic release in France and are made by some well-known online streaming services are not permitted in the competition. For the ways in which many people watch films have changed immensely since the development of Television when there were those who confidently predicted the death of the silver screen. And the same sort of predictions were about when the ownership of video recorders became common. Now we have internet streamed video which is changing our viewing habits again. While there鈥檚 much to be said for a good what is still called 鈥渁 boxset鈥, I believe cinemas and the experience they offer will be with us for some time.
The Cannes Film Festival with the competition for the much-coveted Palm D鈥橭r will I think continue. And behind all the razzmatazz is the hardnosed business of selling films and trying to raise money for the next project. But it isn鈥檛 simply about business and celebrity.
The festival and coveted prize is a celebration of the art of cinema. It represents the best of freedom of expression, endeavour and skill.
Heavenly Father, We thank you for the creative aspects-for what it means to be hum human. Inspire us to use our creativity for in pursuit of goodness and beauty.
Amen
