Brain Awareness Week
Adam Walton marks Brain Awareness Week, which aims to promote research into neuroscience and the brain.
Adam chats to Dr James Walters of the MRC Centre for Neuropsychiatric Genetics & Genomics at Cardiff University, about a recent major study into schizophrenia. In what was the largest study of its kind, the team identified 50 new gene regions that increase the risk of developing schizophrenia. James also works with the National Centre for Mental Health, who are recruiting volunteers to share their experience of mental health. (see link on this page for further details)
We hear from reporter Jason Phelps who visits Cardiff for a preview of this weekend's "Brain Games" event. The National Museum Wales in Cardiff are hosting the free, family event on Sunday 18th March from 11:00 - 4:00.
It's a common sight to see runners, walkers and members of gyms wearing headphones, listening to their favourite music. A new study by scientists at Brunel University London, examined the brainwaves of walkers listening to music using portable EEG machines. The results showed that music distracted the walkers' focus, but boosted their energy and enjoyment, an effect linked to a boost in beta frequencies in the brain.
Adam also hears from Professor Penny Lewis of Cardiff University about the Sleep Lab at CUBRIC, Cardiff's Brain Imaging Research Centre. They are planning an event for department staff to co-incide with World Sleep Day, which is encouraging us all to think about improving our quality of sleep.
We also hear from Kathleen Roina of the Dana Foundation, who have been running Brain Awareness Week since 1996.
