Crucial Gladiators

The Don's selections cross time, space and genre. This week's Crucial Vinyl is Trenchtown Mix Up, released in 1976 by Jamaican roots reggae band the Gladiators.

The Don's selections cross time, space and genre. Each week, as well as blending his favourite new music with classics from the UK, USA, Jamaica, Africa and way beyond, he highlights a piece of Crucial Vinyl - a cherished album from his own collection. This week it's Trenchtown Mix Up, released in 1976 by Jamaican band the Gladiators.

Don says, "A great debut album by one of the many acts later signed to Richard Branson's Frontline label during my memorable first trip to Jamaica with John Lydon.

Like many of their peers, the Gladiators had already worked with producers Lee 'Scratch' Perry and Coxsone Dodd, before moving over to Joe Gibbs' studio, where they collaborated with Prince Tony Robinson and recorded what is widely acknowledged as a classic example of roots reggae.".
