Pause for Thought

Pause for Thought

From Father Brian D鈥橝rcy, a Catholic Passionist priest:

This week has an unusual mixture of feasting and fasting. We feast on Pancake Tuesday. We fast on Ash Wednesday, which is a day of Penance and prayer at the beginning of Lent.

Lent is an old English word for spring; it鈥檚 an opportunity then to change for the better as much as it is about sackcloth and ashes.

That is why I鈥檓 looking forward to the six weeks of Lent leading up to Easter Sunday, which ironically falls on April fool鈥檚 Day this year. God does have a sense of humour after all.

I work on the principle that if I don鈥檛 change direction, I鈥檓 likely to end up where I鈥檓 heading. That鈥檚 a frightening thought.

To freshen up my approach to life, I鈥檝e drawn up six pivotal questions to reflect upon - one for each week of Lent. These are my questions; you need to write your own.

This week I ask myself: how do I describe where my life is now and what words describe the vision of life I鈥檇 like to have?

Week two will be: What makes me happy? What paralyses me?

And then: What gift or talent do I have that I am ignoring? How can I challenge myself more?

聽聽聽聽聽聽 Followed by: How do I handle the crises of life? Fright Fight or Flight?

聽聽聽聽聽聽 Coming to the end of Lent I鈥檒l be positive: Name one hundred beautiful things that I take for 聽聽聽聽granted.

聽聽聽聽聽聽聽 Lastly and looking ahead; what practical steps, after Easter will I take, to ensure I keep on changing?

I plan to use these coming weeks to make me a better person and to leave behind lazy habits and harmful addictions.

To make sure it鈥檚 not just about me though, I鈥檓 going to help the poor in a practical way; I鈥檓 going to give until it hurts.

Actually, I want to nurture my inner peace and the surest way to be at peace is to work relentlessly on forgiving myself and others. I believe that you forgive others not because they deserve forgiveness but because you deserve peace.

Forgiveness won鈥檛 change the past but the future will be happier.
