Policing the paedophile hunters - Nolan reveals the contents of a PSNI letter to activists on prosecutions
Policing the paedophile hunters - Nolan Show reveals the contents of a PSNI letter to activists on prosecutions.
The Nolan Show can reveal this morning that the PSNI has given a 30-point letter to so called paedophile hunter groups. The PSNI have told us that the letters are to "clarify what police need to include in the investigative files they present to the PPS." Some have described the letter as a "paedophile hunter prosecution checklist." The PSNI deny this and have told the Nolan Show that the letters "were not provided as any form of guidance to these groups going forward." The letter was sent from PSNI Public Protection Branch. Stephen got reaction of former assistant chief constable Alan McQuillan and former Policing Board member Dolores Kelly.
Also on the programme, It's been described as one last chance to restore power-sharing. But at Stormont yesterday it was more like groundhog day. The DUP say significant gaps remain - but they won't tell you what they are. They say there has been progress - but they won't tell you what it is. And the smaller parties say they're being frozen out. All this while a cash strapped civil service cries out for a budget as hospital waiting lists go up and our schools struggle to balance the books. Stephen spoke to SDLP MLA Nichola Mallon and UUP MLA Steve Aiken.
And, families of soldiers killed in the IRA Hyde Park bombing have been granted legal aid to take a civil case against the alleged bombers. In 2014 a case against John Downey was dropped after it emerged in court that he had received a so-called 'on the run' letter in error. Downey has denied murdering four soldiers in the 1982 bombing. Mark Tipper, whose brother Simon was just 19 when he was murdered in the bombing, spoke to Stephen.
