Chris is joined by 成人快手 science correspondent Jonathon Amos and hedgehog honcho Lucy who has a PhD in these prickly creatures. Plus we meet a super skier on Great Job Wednesday.
Chris gets the latest on Elon Musk's Falcon Heavy launch with 成人快手 science correspondent Jonathon Amos and finds out the scientific point to the Space X spectacle. With news that the numbers of hedgehogs in the UK are falling we speak to Hedgehog honcho Lucy who has a PhD in these prickly creatures and learn about what we can do to care for the dwindling population. Plus it's Great Job Wednesday, so we take to the ice and meet a super skier Sue who's an instructor in Gloucester. After we hear about Chris' incredible fact about Clint Eastwood, we ask for your claims to the fame of the Californian town of Carmel. Pause for Thought
From聽Ruth Scott, Anglican Priest and Quaker:
I never thought I鈥檇 hear myself say this but, hooray for nose hair! Appreciate it if you鈥檝e got it!聽 Due to chemotherapy I spent most of last year without any hair at all. My nose ran like a constantly leaking tap, unexpectedly dripping over me and anything else in the vicinity 鈥 not an attractive look! Initially, I wondered how I鈥檇 cope with losing my long blond hair but I went from Goldilocks to Baldilocks with relative ease. I think that鈥檚 because, when my wonderful specialist nurse, Mair茅ad, told me my hair would fall out with the second chemo, I took matters into my own hands: The day before that treatment began I asked my husband Chris to shave my head. I couldn鈥檛 stop my hair falling out, but I could choose when and how I lost it.
Making the choice made all the difference. My dignity remained intact, and I didn鈥檛 feel so helpless and out of control of my own destiny. The experience reminded me how we live in a society where many decisions affecting human well-being, are often made without any reference to those impacted by them, particularly in the workplace. Yet being able to make choices is crucial to a person maintaining dignity and having a positive sense of identity. Parents know it鈥檚 much better to give children options to choose from, rather than to back them into a corner with the 鈥測ou鈥檒l do this because I say so鈥 approach. And I suspect most of us would prefer to be 鈥榳orked with鈥, rather than 鈥榙one to鈥.聽
In the gospel stories Jesus involves those he helps, in the healing process, often with thoughtful questions like 鈥淒o you want to be healed?鈥, 鈥淲hat do you want?鈥 or, 鈥淲hat can you see?鈥 Their perspectives matter. I know, too, that my experience of cancer treatment was made so much easier because the amazing team looking after me included me in the decision-making. St Benedict describes this way of treating each other as 鈥檛he courtesy of love鈥. Whether we鈥檙e hairy or hairless I think it鈥檚 a courtesy we could well do with more of today.聽
