Declan and Luke: Tales from the Shop Floor
As part of Listening Month, Conor McKay introduces compelling real-life conversations from around NI. Declan and his brother Luke discuss retail through the years in Derry.
Declan and Luke's family ran Austins department store in the heart of Derry city for many years - it was the oldest department store in the world when it closed its doors for the last time in 2016. The brothers remember retail through some colourful chapters in the city's history - sailors brawling in the streets, hawking cheap cigarettes to the navy - and of course the dark days of the Troubles when community spirit shone through.
