Good morning. The McEwan Hall, where University of Edinburgh students graduate, along with the Square on which it sits, has been undergoing a huge renovation, and has recently re-opened. At the heart of this grandeur is a newly commissioned art work by the artist Susan Collis, entitled 鈥淭he next big thing鈥�is a series of little things鈥�. 聽In contrast to the sculptures and statues around Edinburgh, designed to make grand statements, this art work consists of hundreds of bronze pegs embedded into the concrete floor of the square, mimicking the drips left behind by someone carrying a leaking bucket. As people walk over the splashes, their feet will polish the bronze so that the work will change and develop over time.聽

It reminds me of the sixty pairs of rusted iron shoes I came across on a visit to Budapest recently, all pointing into the Danube. The shoes were different shapes and sizes, from baby bootees to the boots of a workman. All represented the lives of the hundreds of Jewish people rounded up in 1944/45 and forced to stand in a line facing the river, often tied together, before being shot and pushed in. Behind them the Hungarian parliament building sat proud and ornate, while the memorial is gently decorated with fresh flowers and candles.聽

Both artworks play with the contrast of scale and materials. The precious in the mundane; the unobtrusive amongst the imposing.聽

There are parables of Jesus which play with the same contrasts: of treasure hidden in a field, of tiny pearls of great price. These works of street art are visual reminders of human truths with spiritual significance.聽

Living God, inspire our openness to the worth of little things, to being surprised by that which is hidden and unobtrusive, but burnished and beautiful. Amen
