Remarkable end to toxic week in politics sees atmosphere over Kingsmill row soften between Sinn Fein and DUP

Remarkable end to toxic week in politics sees atmosphere over Kingsmill row soften between Sinn Fein and DUP.

It's been a toxic week for local politics which started with the outrage over the stunt by Sinn Fein MP Barry McElduff who posted a video online with a Kingsmill loaf on his head on the anniversary of the massacre. He was suspended by his party for three months as a result and there was a further row yesterday after some unionist politicians shared online a cartoon about the atrocity in which 10 Protestant workmen were murdered 42 years ago. But last night on The View on 成人快手 One the DUP and Sinn Fein went some way to drawing a line under the matter, with a remarkable exchange between Edwin Poots, John O'Dowd and host Mark Carruthers. Sinn Fein MLA John O'Dowd said he was ashamed by the Kingsmills atrocity as he made an outright condemnation of the sectarian attack. Former DUP Minister Edwin Poots said the hurt caused to the families this week should sharpen the focus on the two parties to get talks back on track to try and reach political agreement. And he also condemned the attack on four members of the O'Dowd family which happened the day before Kingsmills. In the studio last night for that interview was Newsletter political editor Sam McBride and the Irish News security correspondent Allison Morris, who both joined Vinny this morning.

Also on the programme, is it time for a second vote on Brexit? Former UKIP leader Nigel Farage says he is 'close to backing another EU referendum' to end the "whinging and whining" of anti-Brexit campaigners. Mr Farage told Channel 5's The Wright Stuff that a fresh vote could "kill off" the Remain campaign for a generation. SDLP MLA Claire Hanna is her party's Brexit spokesperson, she debates with commentator Martin Daubney.
