Classic and neglected recordings from the 1920s, 30s and 40s

Bob Hope, Vera Lynn, Sydney Bechet's majestic version of Summertime and a reminder of a great talent rarely heard today, Lee Morse, all call out to us from a golden time.

In The Archive tonight we find Bob Hope thanking us for the memory, Vera Lynn heading up a wooden hill, one of the greatest jazz tracks of any era, Sydney Bechet's majestic version of Summertime and a reminder of a great talent rarely heard today Lee Morse. It's quite a noisy place this archive and full of recordings which saw the great stars of popular music and instrumentalists of the day stepping up to the microphone and performing exactly what we hear today with no way of correcting errors or eccentricities. We don't or can't look back further than the artifical barriers we've set ourselves - the beginnings of rock'n'roll perhaps, the Beatles era, flower-power or Punk. The place we don't go back beyond until now.
