Big questions over collusion

Court hears self-confessed UVF killer and police informer Gary Haggarty gave his Special Branch handlers advance information about a number of murders.

Gary Haggarty, the self-confessed UVF multiple killer and police informer, will have to wait until the new year to find out how long he will spend behind bars. He's been offered a controversial state deal that offers a significantly reduced prison term in return for giving evidence against other terrorist suspects. A court heard yesterday that Haggarty gave his Special Branch handlers advance information about a number of murders. The extent of Haggarty's criminal activities is staggering. As well as pleading guilty to 202 crimes, he asked that 301 others be taken into consideration. In total he admitted 503 offences, including: five murders, five attempted murders and 25 conspiracies to murder. In one truly shocking episode the UVF was to decide who would kill a Catholic by the toss of a coin. But Haggarty volunteered to commit the murder to cover up the fact he was a police informer. Stephen spoke to Sinn Fein MLA Gerry Kelly, former senior RUC and PSNI police officer Alan Mains and victims' campaigner Raymond McCord.

Police officers in Northern Ireland are still waiting for an agreement on a pay rise to be implemented by the Department of Justice. Earlier this week it was revealed that 55,000 Northern Ireland health workers would receive their one per cent pay rise. The chair of the Police Federation for Northern Ireland Mark Lindsay is calling for officers to receive what was recommended earlier this year by the independent pay review body.
