Magnesium and Oliver's Mark Lester
Chris marvels at the benefits of magnesium with Dr Michael Mosley and meets Mark Lester, who played Oliver in the original 1968 film adaptation of the Charles Dickens' classic.
Chris marvels at the magic of magnesium with Dr Michael Mosley, who tells us how this natural mineral is involved in 600 reactions in our bodies and can even aid sore knees and insomnia. On Day 4 of the Eggs Files, Chris asks listeners for their recipes for perfect boiled egg. We continue our love affair of the film Oliver! by asking the listeners cast suggestions for the Oliver! re-make. The Not-So-Mystery-Guest today is the Mark Lester, who played Oliver in the original 1968 adaptation of the Charles Dickens classic, he reminisces about his time on set and gives us his tips on the re-make, which sparks a second Top Tenuous on the film. Vassos is joined in the Sports Locker by Olympic Gold medal-winning show jumper Nick Skelton. Writer and vicar Dave Tomlinson has Thursday's Pause For Thought.

Pause For Thought
From Dave Tomlinson, writer and Vicar of St Luke’s Holloway in London:
One of my favourite vicarly duties is baptising children – and rumour has it that I’m a bit of a baby whisperer. They do mostly behave for me, which is no mean achievement given that I douse them with cold water (although I do mostly sneak a bit of warm into the jug!)
Last Saturday it was Archie’s turn (I dunked his brother Alfie last year), and he was a dream apart from insisting on grabbing my glasses. He was so good that I held onto him for the rest of the service. Someone showed me a picture of Archie gazing at me while I blessed him. ‘You must have very good karma’, she said. Hypnotic Liverpudlian charm, more like it!
In our church after a baptism, we often play The Pretenders version of Bob Dylan’s song ‘Forever Young’.
Dylan wrote the song for his son Jesse, and released it almost exactly 44 years ago. It opens with the lines ‘May God bless and keep you always / May your wishes all come true’, and then proceeds as a gritty prayer for his son to remain strong and happy even in adversity – and to never lose his inner youth.
In an age when children had minimal status, Jesus gave them surprisingly good press. He famously rebuked his disciples when they tried to stop parents bringing their children for a blessing, and once held up a child telling the crowd that they needed to become like her – to sometimes abandon caution, take time to play, be curious, have a go at something new, live in the moment.
One of my role models for staying forever young was an Australian priest called Peter Thomson, a man who influenced international politicians, leaders of industry and academics, yet somehow managed never to grow up. No one could make my wife giggle like Peter. He was warm as toast, cheeky as a monkey – and endearingly irresponsible. And no one showed us better how, in Bob Dylan’s words, to ‘build a ladder to the stars and climb on every rung.’
May little Archie grow up knowing this in his life too.Â
