The TUV leader Jim Allister says there's no room for compromise on proposals for an Irish Language Act. And he says the purpose of the act is to "hollow out" the Britishness of Northern Ireland. Yesterday, in a speech to party members in County Meath, Sinn Fein president Gerry Adams made it clear that their position on an Irish Language Act hasn't changed. So what exactly are Sinn Fein's proposals for an Irish language Act? What would it look like? How would it work? And how much would it cost? Sinn Fein's former culture minister Car谩l N铆 Chuil铆n - in comments on Twitter - has directed people to the proposals she published as part of a public consultation in 2015. These include the right to speak the Irish language in courts and tribunals - with interpretation provided free of charge to the Irish speaker; affirmative action in favour of Irish speakers in recruitment to the Civil Service and other public bodies; the appointment of an Irish Language commissioner, and place names in Irish to be given official and legal recognition.
