Script - Shaykh Ibrahim Mogra Tuesday 27th June

Good morning,
I鈥檝e been following the recent Cricket ICC Champions Trophy and the success of our football team in the World Cup 2018 qualifiers. I can see why the physical strength and well being of the players is so important. Islam encourages us to look after our bodies and prohibits us from neglecting or harming them聽 through over indulgence. We are encouraged to eat of the good and wholesome things, which God has provided. Muhammad (peace be upon him) encouraged regular exercise such as running, swimming, wrestling, archery and horse riding. He stressed that overeating and gluttony are harmful. Excessive abstinence from food is also discouraged since it leads to weakness and incapacity.
The Qur鈥檃n commends work and activity and frowns on inactivity and sluggishness. However, it is important to remember that physical fitness and strength is not an end in itself and the body is not to be venerated or worshipped. Muhammad said, 鈥淕od does not look to your appearances and to your bodies but He looks to your hearts and deeds.鈥 Ramadan has just finished and for a whole month, Muslims have tried to achieve this spiritual fitness by fasting, going from dawn to sunset without food and drink. The long and hot days tested their determination to become spiritually fit as they underwent the hardship of hunger, thirst and sleep deprivation, a result of extended worship at night and then staying awake for suhur, the pre-dawn breakfast.


Dear God, save us from being lazy and idle. Bless us with good health and spiritual strength. We ask you God to cure all those who suffer from physical and spiritual ailments, amin.
