Pause For Thought

Chris, there鈥檚 another 10 nights of Ramadan left, but this morning all I can think about is鈥� breakfast.

听

Kids don鈥檛 usually have to fast until they鈥檙e in their early teens, but I wanted to fast as soon as I knew what fasting was. It seemed like something very mysterious, like joining a secret society whose rituals comprised of splendid meals eaten at odd times.

听

I remember walking bleary eyed into our kitchen while it was still pitch black out 鈥� literally half-an-hour or so before the crack of dawn. Even before I sat down my mother would be urgently telling us to get eating because the fast day would soon officially begin. The kitchen was a hive of activity and the sounds that greeted me were like a culinary symphony: the crunch of flaky flatbread coming off the griddle, eggs sizzling in the pan and the gargling cascade of strong tea. I know now that it was the sound of love.

听

What I鈥檇 never really considered was that for most of the nights during the holy month, my mother didn鈥檛 really sleep. She鈥檇 come back from prayers at the mosque and while we napped for a few hours, she鈥檇 have one eye on the clock and be up well before us to prepare the meal. I鈥檓 sure I would have been fine with corn flakes, but she wanted this time 鈥� and the food that we ate - to be special.

听

鈥淚 slept and dreamt that life was joy,鈥� wrote the mystical poet Rabindranath Tagore, 鈥淚 awoke and saw that life was service. I acted and behold, service was joy.鈥�

听

Yesterday morning, as we heard the harrowing stories of people fleeing for their lives from the terrifying onslaught of fire and smoke, we also heard about those awoken from slumber 鈥� firefighters, medics, police and so many ordinary people 鈥� that rushed headlong into danger to save lives. Tagore鈥檚 words find truth in their example.

听

These Ramadan mornings, I鈥檓 the one who gets up early and prepares breakfast for my little family. In those quiet moments, I always say a prayer for my mother. After all, I wouldn鈥檛 know anything about joy or service, if she hadn鈥檛 shown it to my by cooking breakfast before the sun rose. Now, I only wish she鈥檇 taught be to make
