Pause For Thought

Pause For Thought

From Rabbi Dr Harvey Belovski, rabbi of Golders Green Synagogue and CEO of University Jewish Chaplaincy:

I’m often asked if I get stressed.  I could pretend that I don’t, but like everyone, I have anxious moments when I am expected to perform in front of a large audience.  Just before I deliver my big sermon on the evening of the Day of Atonement is certainly a moment when I might get the jitters, especially if I can’t think of a decent joke.  A slight fear that things might go wrong or that I might disappoint my audience is probably healthy and encourages me to prepare properly.

But stress can easily spill over into work, health and family life in harmful ways. In 2015, more than 17 million work days were lost to stress in the UK.  A lot of unhappy people and a cost of more than £2 billion to the British economy.

In my work supporting Jewish chaplains on campus, I hear a lot about stress, particularly as we are in the middle of exam season.  At home, we have three children doing public exams, although they were worryingly chilled this morning…

I left university at a time when jobs were relatively easy to find, but these days, students can feel huge pressure to perform. Stress impacts on our physical well-being and our family and friends too.  And parents’ own anxieties can make things worse without them realising.  Which reminds of the time when someone asked his son: why did you get such a low mark in your exam?  The son replied: Absence!  His dad was incredulous.  He asked: Were you absent on the day of the exam?  The boy said: No, but the boy who sits next to me was.

Jewish wisdom takes stress very seriously, especially its impact on our physical health.  Maimonides, a great 12th-century rabbi, philosopher and doctor, wrote about emotional equilibrium and how chronic anxiety eventually harms our bodies. To combat anxiety, he promoted a holistic approach to well-being through exercise, healthy diet, sleep and – interestingly – appreciation of nature and music.

There’s no easy solution to exam stress, but a nice walk in the park or a cup of tea and a chat with a friend can do wonders.  But if that doesn’t work, don’t suffer alone: there are plenty of listening ears to carry you through.
