It may have looked like a very poor effort at a Village People tribute act, but the reason I was got up like a construction worker on Tuesday was for the topping out ceremony of the new Senate House for the University of Northampton, where I am Chancellor. Topping out traditionally is the ceremony when the last brick or beam of a new building is put in place. It goes back to the Vikings, but in more recent times was usually done by a lady in a hat and gloves who would deposit a blob of cement on a brick with a silver trowel and everyone would have sandwiches while a real builder finished the job. Today鈥檚 construction methods are rather different, and the honour on Tuesday, which fell to the Lord Lieutenant of the county, was done not with a silver trowel but an Allen key, tightening the last screw on a truss holding the plate glass balcony on the top floor in place.

It reminded me of when I was curate at Boston Stump, the great medieval church looking out from Lincolnshire to the Wash. When Phil and Tony the stonemasons were working at the top of its tower, on the great lantern built in the 1500s, they found a penny left under a stone by the anonymous master mason who finished it.

But that鈥檚 not all they found. Also hidden by that stone was an exquisite carving of a bird in the nest with her chicks, as fresh and as clean as if it has been done yesterday, but unseen for five hundred years. Why would a master mason expend such creativity and craft on a carving that would be seen by no-one for half a millennium?

I expect it was because he saved his best not for man but for God. That was a commonplace idea in the Middle Ages, and lasted through to our own era, I guess, in the tradition of wearing Sunday best.

That鈥檚 largely gone now, but something mysterious and powerful endures I think, in marking out buildings for great purposes: singing the praises of God, singing the songs that make the whole world sing, providing showgirl venues in the hottest spots north of Havana (sorry, Barry, I'm a bit star struck), and being places of illumination, learning, transformation, and empowerment.
