Pause For Thought

Writer and Musician, Jahnavi Harrison.

I just spent a month in Australia 鈥 got back a few days ago, so I鈥檓 still living in that weird limbo where you feel like eating a nice big lunch at 4 in the morning!

I was out there not so much for a holiday, but touring different cities from Melbourne all the way up to Brisbane playing mantra music 鈥 a type of meditation from the Hindu tradition.听 We played at surf clubs, yoga studios and one night we even did an outdoor event, seated on a lawn outside the Victoria state library, singing as the seagulls swooped overhead and tourists stopped to take videos and selfies. I have to say - it was great fun and has been getting me thinking more about the power of sound and singing.

I read some time back that researchers at a Swedish University proved that when people sing together their heart rates actually become synchronised 鈥 found that pretty amazing鈥 It doesn鈥檛 have to be religious singing of course- a friend was at Glastonbury for Adele鈥檚 set last year and said that even though he鈥檚 not a great fan of her music, the experience of 150,000 people belting it out in unison moved him to tears.

In the Hindu tradition singing is considered the highest form of worship. The chants and songs that are used are called mantras 鈥 a Sanskrit word which literally means to free the mind.听 These days the word mantra is used pretty loosely to mean any slogan or affirmation 鈥 but a genuine mantra is an ancient sacred sound formula that is powerfully uplifting and has been passed from teacher to student for a very, very long time.

I鈥檝e been singing mantras my whole life, but sharing more widely for about the last ten years, everywhere from mental health rehab facilities to corporates. When I was a child I never thought mantras and meditation would be something cropping up in fashion magazines and occasionally prescribed on the NHS, but these days so many people who may not be religious at all are finding joy and relief from stress in this type of practice.

Life may not be like La La Land 鈥 with traffic jams of people ready to burst into song at any moment 鈥 but I believe that it鈥檚 is better lived, with even just one sing song a day.
