Pause For Thought

Pause For Thought

From Julia Neuberger, Senior Rabbi at the west London Synagogue:

I was writing an entry for a biographical dictionary, when I heard the UK election had been called. When you read peoples鈥 obituaries, it brings home just how very short our lives are, and how many events which feel momentous at the time sink into a kind of soggy oblivion not long after.聽 When we look back, distinct events often seem to merge, and we find remembering detail really hard. In the Hebrew Bible, King David sang the praises of his son, Solomon, his appointed successor- no election here! - but said this:聽

鈥淔or we are strangers before thee, and sojourners, as were all our fathers: our days on the earth are as a shadow, and there is none abiding.鈥

Our stay on earth is fleeting, like a shadow. We don鈥檛 stay on to see the future. And, as we contemplate momentous events, elections, threats of nuclear weapons use, the rise of nationalism or whatever, we have to remember that we are only here briefly.

That could make us fatalistic. If our stay on this earth is so brief, why bother to even try to improve things? But an answer comes from a compilation of the teaching from the rabbis, known as Ethics of the Fathers:

"It is not incumbent upon you to complete the work, but neither are you at liberty to desist from it" (Avot 2:21)

In other words, you won鈥檛 be able to finish God鈥檚 tasks here on earth, for you won鈥檛 get to the end of the story. But you have to give it a go. You鈥檙e not free to decide simply to take no account of what is going on, just because you won鈥檛 be there for the end.

In a time of so many uncertainties, I think that鈥檚 really important. We may feel like opting out, and just seeing our friends. After all, that鈥檚 a lovely way to live one鈥檚 life. But the truth is I believe we have to do more, take some responsibility, try to make the word a better place. I may never know if my contribution helped. I won鈥檛 know what happens next. But I think I do have to engage with that bit of the story I鈥檓 living in. Opting out isn鈥檛 an option.聽
