Pause For Thought

Pause For Thought

Comedian & writer Paul Kerensa

It鈥檚 Good Friday, a confusing day 鈥 like a Bank Holiday Monday but on a Friday, that jumps around the diary each year. If you want to know how the date鈥檚 worked out: Easter鈥檚 always the weekend after the first full moon after the vernal equinox 鈥 a decision I think you can tell was made by a council. But then, Easter has a history of troublesome collective decisions by groups of people.

Just under 2000 years ago, at the original Good Friday, one of Jesus鈥 twelve disciples betrayed him and had him arrested. An even closer disciple, Simon Peter, denied three times that he knew Jesus 鈥 although he didn鈥檛 say Simon Says, so maybe it didn鈥檛 count.

Later that day, another group weighed in, this time priests and governors passed the buck, not wanting to find Jesus guilty. It was the people who rushed to request: 鈥淐rucify him!鈥 Around late morning, he was. We鈥檙e told the skies turned black, the ground quaked鈥 but that on the third day, he returned.

Easter plays have told this story ever since 鈥 at first in Latin, then a thousand years ago in local languages, after realising that no one spoke Latin. So the people reclaimed the story 鈥 finally hearing it in their own words, seeing it acted out in their own towns and cities, with a cast of hundreds. As the performances became bawdier, the church slowly withdrew from the plays 鈥 the local people took full ownership.

The Easter Passion Plays are back today in towns around the country, though not quite so bawdy. Later this morning, tens of thousands will witness vast street performances in Chester, Tavistock, Crewe, Preston and Trafalgar Square. Once again, the Easter story belongs to the people.

History tells us that sometimes people power gets it right, sometimes wrong. We betray, pass the buck, rush to crucify, or deny what we believe, to save face. We have good days and bad 鈥 dark Good Fridays and hope-filled Easter Sundays, when the past is behind us and the slate clean.

And so it remains the people鈥檚 story, retold if we want, in our language, in our towns, in our own way 鈥 even if that鈥檚 by a low-rent comedian, with a dodgy joke about Simon Says, trying to work out what the vernal equinox is.
