Pause For Thought
I got asked recently to write a letter to my sixteen year old self. I think the idea is for the current crop of sixteen year olds to read it and to imbue the good advice. I don鈥檛 know鈥 I鈥檓 not sure my 16 year-old self would have listened to my ramblings, and to be fair, I actually think she was pretty cool--naively fearless, and I really wouldn鈥檛 want to curtail her too much.
The process did get me thinking though鈥
I began to ask what advice would I give myself thirty years from here. That will be my 76 year-old self advising me as I approach this rather daunting period called 鈥淢iddle Age鈥.
I鈥檓 sure that my 76 year old self would be rather happy if I exercised more, and made sure I was as fit and sprightly as I could manage. I don鈥檛 drink, and I eat pretty well, so my aged self should be happy with me there. My super arthritic family history suggests I should make sure I take those fish-oil supplements the doctor advised despite them tasting foul! I鈥檓 sure 76 year old me will thank me. And I am pretty sure future me will be happy if I made some sort of contribution to my financial future.
But beyond all that, I think 76 year old me will tell me:
Look the next 30 years are going to speed by. There is no time for arguments with people you love. You鈥檒l lose them faster than you can imagine鈥攄on鈥檛 waste a single day.
Those journeys you want to make鈥 Your 76 year old knees are not going to get up some of those hills, so walk them now.
That book you want to write鈥 get on with it! It isn鈥檛 going to write itself. Indeed nothing happens by itself鈥攜ou have to make it happen鈥
Time is running out. Don鈥檛 look back regretting. Give me some good memories, and lots of laughter to look back on.
Basically, I think 76 year old me will underline in red ink the saying of the Prophet:
鈥淭ake benefit of five before five:
your youth before your old age,
your health before your sickness,
your wealth before your poverty,
your free-time before your busyness,
and your life before your death.鈥
I better get on with it I guess鈥76 year old me is waiting.
