Steve launches his Alternative 90s World Cup with Jo Whiley, unveiling the shortlist of 16 songs that will battle it out to be crowned ultimate anthem on Friday.

Previous World Cup knockouts have celebrated various genres, artists, not to mention the power of music to motivate: from favourite reggae tracks to metal, punk, children's TV themes and running tunes.

Effectively an excuse to celebrate and delve into one area of music, Steve Lamacq's Musical World Cups provoke a lot of debate, and good-natured dissent. The reigning World Cup champion is Kate Bush who has lifted two cups to date, most recently when Running Up That Hill was named best running tune last August.

Expect a nostalgic return to the 90s, with rousing, uplifting tunes that have stood the test of time.
