Broadband and Mobile

Adam Walton explores the road to universal broadband and mobile coverage, which began 32 years ago this month with the launch of Britain's first "cellular" mobile networks, Vodafone and Cellnet.聽

We hear from Ofcom's director in Wales, Rhodri Williams about the progress of networks across Wales and some of the problems that still remain to bring coverage to all corners of the country.

We visit Llangefni where Ynys Mon MP Albert Owen has been holding an event for Anglesey's frustrated broadband and mobile users. There was a chance for the public to meet representatives from the Welsh Government and various service providers.

Julie James, the minister for Skills & Science in Wales, outlines the progress of "Superfast Cymru", a scheme, run in conjunction with BT, to bring fast fibre broadband to most areas of Wales. That is due to end on 2017 and be replaced with another scheme which is designed to reliable broadband to those premises not able to benefit from the current scheme.

Finally, we hear from Emeritus Professor Peter Excell of Wrexham Glyndwr University, who thinks the capacity of the mobile networks, especially the 4G and proposed 5G networks, could offer a data solution for those where fixed broadband is proving difficult to obtain.聽
