Our guest editor Carey Mulligan wanted to focus much of her programme on dementia, it鈥檚 an issue close to her heart as her grandmother has the disease. Figures released today by Alzheimer鈥檚 Society, of which Carey is a supporter, reveal that nearly half of GPs think it鈥檚 not in the best interests of someone with dementia to receive a diagnosis. Our guest editor Carey Mulligan passionately believes that we should talk more about dementia. Her grandmother was diagnosed with the condition over a decade ago. Carey invited us to join the Mulligan family as they celebrated her grandmother鈥檚 birthday just a couple of days before Christmas. Carey has also been speaking to Sir Michael Parkinson and Michael Palin, who both have connections to the condition.

The Royle Family actress Liz Smith has died aged 95. The actress, who played the ailing Nana in the hit comedy show, died on Christmas Eve. Mike Leigh gave Liz Smith a breakthrough part in Bleak Moments and Ricky Tomlinson starred with her in The Royle Family.
